5 Basic Treatment Options For Gum Disease

Posted on

Gingivitis, or gum disease, can be caused by many things including but not limited to: bad oral hygiene, pregnancy, a bad diet, diabetes, stress, plaque build up, or even just genetics. Treatment options for gingivitis also vary extensively, but the basics all include a common theme; Consistency. Gingivitis treatments are not a one and done. In order to fight this condition one must be dedicated and consistent in their efforts.

1- Improving Oral Hygiene. While there are many causes of gingivitis, the number one thing that will improve it is improving one's oral hygiene. Brushing multiple times a day and flossing daily will likely cause bleeding of the gums, but keeping the affected area clean of sugars, plaque and bacteria is crucial.

2-Frequent Visits To Dentist. A major cause of gingivitis is plaque. Dental plaque is formed when saliva and food mix together for a long period of time. Plaque sticks to the surface of teeth, and can mineralize to form a hard substance called tartar. Tartar and dental plaque can only be removed by a dentist or dental hygienist. If one has been to the dentist for a cleaning, they will probably remember the part of the visit where it feels like the dental professional is literally just scraping their teeth with their instruments. That is the dentist attempting to remove tartar from the front and back surface of the teeth, as well as between teeth. While this practice often causes bleeding of the gums, it is an effective treatment of gingivitis.

3-Medicated Mouthwash. In addition to the physical removal of tartar and dental plaque, a dentist may prescribe medicated mouthwash that will help to decrease the plaque causing bacteria that can be accumulated daily. If consistently used, mouthwash can decrease gingivitis in individuals.

4-Antibiotics. In serious cases a dentist may also prescribe antibiotics to help fight against gingivitis. If left untreated, gingivitis can lead to a more serious condition which is called periodontal disease. This is when gingivitis leads to large holes or flaps in the gums which can trap food and can cause an infection in the roots of teeth and may even infect the bone. Antibiotics may help to treat any infections that may arise, hopefully preventing periodontal disease.

5-Diet. It is amazing how much can be improved by improving one's diet. Consuming less sugars daily can reduce the amount of plaque that forms, and protect the gums from breaking down.
